In late November, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warning letters to 15 companies for illegally selling CBD products in ways that violate the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act)…Under Iowa law, however, CBD is still a controlled substance. The Legislature passed the Hemp Act, paving the way for legalization, and Gov. Kim Reynolds signed it in May. But the U.S. Department of Agriculture still needs to approve the state’s hemp plan, which isn’t expected to happen until early next year, said Robin Pruisner, hemp administrator for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship…The FDA believes that many unanswered questions and data gaps about CBD toxicity exist, and some of the available data raise serious concerns about potential harm from CBD. The revised Consumer Update outlines specific safety concerns related to CBD products, including potential liver injury, possibly according to one severely flawed study of a handful of mice…The FDA warns against interactions with other drugs. Anyone taking Coumadin, Warfarin or other blood thinners should probably not take CBD without consulting a doctor first….According to Dr. Peter Grinspoon, CBD affects other drugs exactly the way that grapefruit juice does — it competitively inhibits the liver enzymes (cytochrome P450). Therefore, CBD can somewhat raise the levels of other drugs in the body…The FDA also cites drowsiness, diarrhea, and changes in mood. Additionally, the FDA claims studies in animals have shown that CBD can interfere with the development and function of testes and sperm, decrease testosterone levels, and impair sexual behavior in males. Questions also remain about the cumulative use of CBD and CBDs impacts on vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant or breastfeeding women….Until then, the sale of CBD oil remains illegal in Iowa, except by a small number of approved pharmacies.
